This blog is the product of Brian Gryphon. Although some blogs are designed to host a variety of conversations and debates, this is more of a journal; it presents some of my photographic work, rambling on various issues (generally from a progressive’s point of view) as well as reviewing the work of other artists/ designers using web-based POD (“print on demand”) galleries and shops. The blog title (Deep Within I Know I’m Free) is from this poem of mine from the ’80s.
“Queer, Poet, Photographer, Designer, Sister, Ordained, Card Reader, Kinkster, Blogger, and so much more“
Queer is more than just shorthand for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual or Trans; #Queer encompasses #diversity in Sexual Orientation, Sexual Proclivities, Gender Identity, and Gender Expression. That includes who we engage with sexually/sensually and how. From whether or not traditional romance is involved, to how long a relationship is expected to last and how many participants. It also includes who we are and how we experience & express our personal #gender.
Poet, Photographer and Designer refer to my creative work, available through The Digital Gryphon llc. That site shows my work, as well as linking to a network of authorized Production Partners that offer selected pieces on licensed products from apparel to coffee mugs to fine art prints. Some of my work is designed to create joy while much of it is commentary on society, fairness, queer history and other concerns.
Sister, Ordained, Card Reader:
The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence was founded in San Francisco in 1979. The Order arrived in Toronto in 1981 and in 1983 I was accepted into the Toronto Order of Perpetual Indulgence. Although that House folded in 1986 I have never renounced my vows; this site includes a selection of posts and artifacts.
I am ordained through the Universal Life Church; Rubber Chicken Ministries is my non-theist, spiritual humanist practice that continues the vows I took in 1983 to spread universal joy and expiate stigmatic guilt.
I was introduced to the Tarot by my partner in 1980; together with a roommate, we studied cards, astrology, numerology and other divination tools. I do not believe in fate or destiny in the sense that the future is predetermined. However, we are creatures of habit, influenced by our personal & cultural histories and our biology; with varying levels of self-awareness. So can we really exercise ‘free will‘? I offer card readings through my Etsy shop.
“Kinkster” seems to scare some folks. #Kink (aka creative sex) is as varied as the people who engage in it. It’s a part of my life that provides #joy with #noGuiltNoShame. There are virtually no posts here about that aspect of my life beyond Common Courtesy and Uncommon Interests.
Blogger refers of course to my writings here.
I was born in Toronto about 60 years ago- the third of four children. I’m at least the third generation of a cross-border family. Mom was born in the USA (her Mother was from Canada and her father from the US) but moved to Canada to marry her first husband. Dad was born in Canada; his father was from Ireland while his Mom was born in Canada but raised by a relative in upstate New York. Mom’s older brother was born in Canada but moved to the USA to join the USAF during WW II – and raised two families (at different times) in the US. My brother (and family) now lives and works in the USA while our two sisters (and families) continue to live in south-western Ontario.
In addition to working various full-time jobs since leaving school, I have been producing photographic images for over 40 years. My first assignment was for the high school yearbook. I offer my photography & design on apparel & gift items, and as frame-able prints. My on-line history goes back to CompuServe, Freenets and 2400 baud modems. In fact, Dad introduced me to ‘puters by letting me write code (in ‘basic‘) for the IBM-5150. Now I operate a number of web-sites and on-line shops.
Baptized in the United Church of Canada while young and again in The Metropolitan Community Church of Toronto as an adult, I’ve studied a wide variety of spiritual traditions; nature-based ‘pagan’ as well as ‘major world religions’. I now identify as a “nontheist spiritual humanist” and am ordained in the Universal Life Church, licensed to perform weddings in Ohio and available to bless queer unions or other events of personal significance.
