Penguin-Backed Caterpillar

I have a friend who is, shall we say, very much in to penguins. She now has me seeing penguin images everywhere; including on a caterpillar I saw this morning at the Whetstone Park of Roses in Columbus, OH. I have been advised by Prof. Johnson of OSU’s Department of Evolution, Ecology & Organismal Biology that this is a forest tent caterpillar (scientific name ‘Malacosoma disstria’). He also mentioned that despite the name, this species does not build tents. He reports that the American tent caterpillar (‘M. americanum’) does; he has some in his own back yard. The image is now available as a Greeting Card and on mugs and other gift items.
